A better way

Last week the Indian Workers Association held a memorial service in Glasgow for the ex-chief minister of West Bengal, Jyoti Basu, who died in January at the age of 95. He had been a chief minister for more than 25 years and presided over a left-centre alliance that greatly benefited the workers and peasants in West Bengal. He was also part of a group of Indian grassroots leaders and parliamentarians that framed many left-centre alliances, including in the Lok Sabha, India's parliament.

When watching the dreadful spectacle of the corruption and adversarial politics of Westminster, or the unedifying sight in Holyrood of the Labour Party and others attacking the SNP on issues such as tougher alcohol pricing, one is reminded that there are other ways of conducting politics.
