1966 and all that

The recent letters on England's 1966 World Cup success all miss the point. It's not that the English media is wrong to bang on about the victory, as we would do exactly the same. The difference is that the crowing about our triumph would rarely be broadcast south of the Border and certainly not to the same annoyance levels that Scots currently experience about 1966.

One of the driving factors in resentment towards the England team at football tournaments is that Scots have to take media coverage skewed towards the English, and all that goes with it. No other football nation would accept this from one its sporting neighbours, but sadly we Scots do, leading to an unhealthy interest in the downfall of the England team. To actively cheer on England's opponents is not a sign of a mature Scotland, but then the lack of media consideration for the perspectives of the other home nations is not a sign of a mature United Kingdom either.

Your correspondents who complain about the prickly attitude of Scots towards England's 1966 World Cup victory should perhaps ask themselves if this might be due to the fact that, to London broadcasters, every Scottish sporting success is swiftly transformed into a "British" one and our triumphant sportsmen and women become "Brits", whether they like it or not.
