The Scotsman cartoon: Queen’s Speech

ALTHOUGH the Queen’s Speech pressed home that keeping Scotland in the UK should be one of the coalition’s top priorities, the SNP said the speech highlighted why Scots need to vote Yes on 18 September. The speech made no mention of new powers for Holyrood in the event of a No vote, despite all the pro-UK parties promising to extend devolution.

With just over 100 days to go before the referendum on independence, the Queen said in her speech yesterday: “My government will continue to implement new financial powers for the Scottish Parliament and make the case for Scotland to remain a part of the United Kingdom.”

It appears that First Minister Alex Salmond has some hope of having the Scottish Government’s legislative powers extended to beyond that of enforcing a 5p fee for plastic carrier bags.
