The Scotsman cartoon: Grangemouth closure
Thousands of jobs are under threat after a bitter dispute over pay and conditions led to a shock decision to close a huge petrochemicals site.
Owners Ineos said it will appoint liquidators within the next few days to start running down the site at Grangemouth, describing it as a “hugely sad” day.
Following a meeting with Scottish ministers, Mr Salmond said no one should write off the plant and he believes there is still room for negotiation between workers and management.
“This is demonstrated by the fact that Unite have now put forward fresh proposals to the company,” he said.
