Talk of the Town: Lovely bubbly way to spend evening

A city bar is hosting a tasting next month, but instead of the sound of wine being swished around mouths and spat into iron buckets, bubbles will be in the air as champagne is handed out.

Le Di-Vi Wine Bar at Randolph Place is hosting the champagne tasting on Tuesday, October 2, and there will even be a nod towards history, when a “sabrage presentation” takes place, a tradition dating back to Napoleon’s officers coming back from victorious battles.

With nibbles also part of the £40 ticket price, call 0131-538 1815 to secure a place.

It might be preferred, but having a battle victory to celebrate is not essential.

Scots scrimp on style

WE’VE got Harvey Nics and Louis Vuitton amongst others, but it seems we don’t quite cut it in the style stakes.

A new poll by Edinburgh-based travel site Skyscanner reveals that our English neighbours are more stylish than we Scots, with a survey of 12,000 people across Europe putting them out in front.

Skyscanner’s Victoria Bailie said: “London is widely regarded as one of the world’s coolest capitals, and is home to some of the world’s most iconic fashion designers, which may be why the English were voted as leading the Brits in the style stakes.

“However, in lagging some way behind the English in our poll, the Scots clearly have some way to go to convince visitors from the rest of Europe of their style credentials.”

But we in the Capital can take solace from the fact the poll doesn’t mention our great city specifically.

We’re happy to assume those surveyed had only encountered our provincial friends, if you are.

Beware of costly slips

WHILE it’s hard to tell these days exactly what season we’re in, one thing is for sure – winter is on its way.

And so, with that in mind, businesses are being handed some advice to avoid a costly slip.

According to winter risk management specialist GRITIT, the number of people in Edinburgh making claims for personal injuries over the winter months has increased by 26 per cent over the last four years.

With more extreme weather on the way, Capital firms have been warned it’s their responsibility to keep their premises maintained and remove anything hazardous such as snow and ice.

So if you can sledge down the steps to work, there’s probably blame and a claim.
