The Scottish Governement’s plan to scrap Trident would cast a “dark shadow” over the international reception given to an independent Scotland, according to high-ranking defence veterans.
Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, former first sea lord and chief of naval staff, has sent a letter to the First Minister co-signed by former heads of the army, navy, air force and intelligence warning that the proposed constitutional ban on nuclear weapons “would be unacceptable for Nato”.
