In his speech to the Conservative Party Conference, chancellor George Osborne said he would pursue technology companies like Google to force them to pay their full share of tax.

“If you abuse our tax system, you abuse the trust of the British people,” he said.

Mr Osborne also announced that all benefits - except pensions, maternity payments and disability help - will be frozen for two years saving £3.2 billion.

Opponents accused him of trying to balance the books on the backs of poor.
