Alex Salmond made a “declaration of opportunity” ahead of the referendum on Scottish independence as he insisted that leaving the UK could help create a fairer and more prosperous Scotland.

With exactly one month until voters decide if Scotland should stay in the UK, Mr Salmond and his team of cabinet ministers met for the last time before the referendum in Arbroath - the town where a historic declaration of Scottish self-determination was made in 1320.

The First Minister invoked that declaration of Arbroath as he addressed the public, stating that “ambition and aspiration” were at the heart of his “declaration of opportunity”.
