Last week my best friend got hitched. It was a military operation as every minute was time checked between make-up  applications and dress  adjustments.

There was hair to be tonged, teased and twisted into position as an assembly line of heads queued to be coiffed.

The men stayed away as tradition dictates. The reality is they would rather have a leisurely pint before proceeding to lubricate their limbs into suits.

It would appear they get the better end of the deal, but after the hoopla was over and we sent our childhood friend down the aisle at St Mary’s Cathedral, the realisation that the real fun was in beautifying the bridal party sank in.

This giant  game of grown-up dress up is like a social club for style tips. Memories are made and traded in between last-minute nerves and frantic frock changing.

There’s nothing quite like the initial moment when people clock eyes on the bride for the first time, or exchanging dress information with the ladies you haven’t seen since the hen do.

It’s all downhill from there, until the painful moment you remove binding clothes, caked on make-up and brush out your hairspray.

But if there was no pain, there wasn’t beauty gain.
