The resignation of the Minister for Culture, Media and Sport was a final – and overdue – recognition of the damage caused by a second homes expenses claim despite all assurances that “lessons had been learned” and that questionable expenses claims could never be repeated. The reputation of Westminster as a parliament capable of policing itself has been reduced to rubble.
