Leader: Designs on Aberdeen’s gardens look a little rosier

WHEN oil tycoon Sir Ian Wood first proposed his plans for a radical transformation of Union Terrace Gardens in the heart of Aberdeen, there was loud opposition. But on suggestions for a modified proposal, the public mood, it was felt, might prove more sanguine.

Now designs created by six world-class architectural firms to create a new heart for the Granite City have been unveiled and put before residents for their consideration. Many of course will remain implacably opposed to change of any sort, and will insist that this is the overwhelming view in the city.

But that assertion cannot fairly be made until a range of designs is put forward for consideration so that Aberdonians can see for themselves what is in prospect and have an opportunity to express a choice. This is surely the right way forward. The designs are bold and imaginative and a favourite may emerge, reflecting the preferences of regular users of the gardens or those who appreciate the facility of a green space that would be more widely appreciated and admired.

That Sir Ian is prepared to donate £50 million towards the cost should also mitigate concerns over a huge burden devolving on council tax payers. The city can now reflect with its usual good sense on the best way forward.
