Leader comment: New national park would benefit the Borders

The Scottish Borders is a much-loved area of the country with a distinctive identity that sets it apart as somewhere special. But its appeal is not well enough known beyond Scotland itself. Campaigners believe the creation of a national park can help create an internationally recognisable brand.

This would be a welcome boost for the area and for tourism. With a new line at last reconnecting the Borders with the central belt by rail, further enhancement of the area as an attractive destination would be timely.

And given that Scotland, with all its scenic beauty and wide open wilderness, has only two of the UK’s 15 national parks, an addition to that number is surely appropriate.
