John Gibson: Rolf knows who has the ‘highland’?

Like me, you’ve wondered of Terry Wogan over the years: is that a wig? Immaculate with his hair, never a strand out of place. Crimped for every occasion.

Anyway, now The Stage, the weekly mag for the acting profession, reportedly is claiming timeless Terry does use a “highland”, abbreviated rhyming slang for highland jig.

On this hair-raising topic and closer to home, there’s a councillor in the City Chambers who, like Terry, sports a never-changing, indeed wondrous head of hair, painstakingly groomed. We’ve wondered over the years. As Rolf would say, do you know who it is yet?

Me, not to be counted among the hirsute, while I reckon I’ve had the need I’ve never resorted to hanging a highland on the bedpost overnight. That was for Lonnie Donegan’s old man.

In your diary for tomorrow night at the National Library, George IV Bridge, former Bishop of Edinburgh Brian Smith “In Conversation on Faith and Work” with hairdressing’s Charlie Miller.

The library’s press officer, Bryan Christie, is telling me: “Charlie will be talking on how his beliefs and values influence his working life. He’s been deeply influenced by Christianity and Buddhism. He calls himself a spiritual nomad.”

I’ve been aware of Mr Miller’s nomadic tendencies for some time. Anywhere he hangs his scissors is home.
