From the archives: Corporation staffs: War services allowances; 26 September 1939
AT A meeting of the Treasurer’s Committee of Edinburgh Town Council it was emphasised that Corporation employees over 25 are in a reserved occupation, and will not qualify for any allowance unless their departure is approved by the head of the department.
As regards women employees in the various Corporation departments where rates of wages have not been fixed, such as conductresses of the Transport Department, the Committee took the view that, following precedents set by the Home Office and other bodies, the women’s wage rates should be 65 per cent of that for men. The Committee was actuated by the need for maintaining some economic stability in the various Corporation services. It would not be practicable to make allowances to Corporation servants on active service and at the same time pay full male rates for substitute labour.
