From the archive: New salaries for teachers - 18 December, 1950

THE special general meeting of the Educational Institute of Scotland held in Edinburgh on Saturday, and attended by delegates from all over Scotland, approved the action of the Teachers’ Panel of the National Joint Council in accepting under protest the teachers’ scales negotiated by the National Joint Council.

The meeting unanimously approved the following resolution: “That the Secretary of State for Scotland be advised that the EIS is of opinion that the salaries to be paid in terms of the draft resolution will still fail to attract to the teaching profession an adequate number of suitable recruits.” The proposed new salaries represent increases ranging, at the beginning of the scale, from £65 for women graduates (ordinary) to £135 for men with first or second class honours degrees. Upon the draft regulations, the Secretary of State for Scotland will base regulations which he proposes to make shortly.
