On this day: Celtic win the European Cup, 1967

ON this day in 1967, Celtic were crowned European champions in Lisbon after beating Inter Milan 2 - 1 in the European Cup final.

70,000 spectators crammed into the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon to watch Celtic become the first British team to lift the European Cup.

Inter Milan had been champions for the three consecutive years prior to Celtic’s surprise win and were the favourites to retain the cup.

The Celtic team - known as the Lisbon Lions - were the first non-Latin team to secure the European title with all the players in the side born within 30 miles of Glasgow.

Hoops manager Jock Stein said at the time: “There is not a prouder man on God’s Earth than me at this moment. Winning was important, but it was the way that we won that has filled me with satisfaction.”

As well as euphoric scenes in Lisbon, where fans poured onto the pitch at the final whistle, the team flew back to Glasgow to a heroes welcome at Parkhead where 50,000 fans packed into the grandstands and terraces for a victory parade.
