Baram Golzari: trust is a simple thing that reaps large rewards

ERNEST Hemmingway once wrote: “The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.” A remarkably simple piece of advice and one I have taken to heart over many years in business.

Two organisations I trust have been subjected to sustained criticism in recent times, namely my bank and Scottish Enterprise. How many of us have truly trusted either in recent years? I suspect few, and most will have ridden on a wave of public outcry, particularly against banks.

I can only assess both through my own experience and they have been hugely supportive. Representatives of both have gone to great lengths to develop an understanding of the company and its strategic aims.

Relationships in business matter and we are too often quick on the draw to criticise before creating a mutual understanding that can then produce results.

I have read with interest about recent shareholder revolts, backlashes against bonus payments and the ousting of chief executives, but most Scottish businesses are in the fortunate position of not answering to the City.

Instead we are accountable to our customers and suppliers and we work hard at building relationships with them. Why not add your bank and Scottish Enterprise to that list?

The marriage of Lloyds and Bank of Scotland undoubtedly threw up challenges and there was a perceptible slowing of the decision-making process as bureaucracy tightened the noose round the necks of those involved during integration. However, because of our strong existing relationship, we remained supported and unaffected.

Economic development is not simply about crying for cash and a large wad lands with a thump on your desk. The support we have had from Scottish Enterprise in the past 18 months has been remarkable and not a penny has changed hands.

The organisation supported, encouraged and backed us in our ultimately successful bid to win an Olympic licence. We realised our potential with backing from the people at Scottish Enterprise. Trust them – it’s worth it.
