From the archives: Church of Scotland property in italy, 6 July, 1932

THE Rev. Dr Albert G. Mackinnon, Rome, writes: In reports in the English Press, the exact position of affairs with regard to Church of Scotland property in Italy has been slightly misrepresented.

There is confusion between two distinct issues – the registration of Church of Scotland ministers under the new Fascist law, and the legalising of the new name, Church of Scotland, under which the property of the former United Free Church is now held. The registration was completed two years ago. Each Scottish minister received a licence from the State authorising him to discharge his duties as a minister of the Church of Scotland in Italy. No religious agent is allowed to do this work without this. The State must be satisfied that the applicant is a proper and fit person for the responsible position of pastor, and that he has been appointed by a recognised body.
