From the archives: Battle of Britain week, 15 August, 1950

BATTLE of Britain Week will be celebrated this year in the week ending Saturday, September 16. On that day five R.A.F. stations in Scotland will be “At Home” to the public to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the part played by the Royal Air Force.

The public will be welcome to see how the R.A.F lives, works and plays, by visits to the stations at Turnhouse, Dyce, Leuchars, Kinloss and West Freugh, Wigtownshire. At all these stations there will be air displays with, it is hoped, visits from jet aircraft. Static displays of aircraft and equipment will also be featured. Celebration of the anniversary in Scotland will wind up with a service of remembrance and thanksgiving in St Giles’ Cathedral, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 17. The GBP 175,000 Vickers Viscount, the first of the fleet of 20 ordered by B.E.A.C., will make its inaugural flight as a passenger-carrying plane from Northolt to Turnhouse to-day.
