From the archives: American gift to the National Library

A NEWS report from the 13th March, 1950, from The Scotsman’s extensive archives:

The presentation on behalf of Pittsburgh University and the committee of the Scottish Room of that university of a copy of the book ‘Nationality Rooms of the University of Pittsburgh’ was made by Mr. Robert Buell, Consul-General of the United States in Edinburgh to the National Library of Scotland on Saturday. The book was accepted by Mr. J.R. Philip KC, convener of the Standing Committee of the Board of Trustees of the National Library, who described the gift as “a very practical expression of the friendship between our two countries.” Mr. Buell said plans had been developed some 25 years ago to construct a large and central building for the University of Pittsburgh. It incorporated a series of rooms typical of the architecture, art, and culture of the respective countries from which the population of Pittsburgh came. The Scottish Room had been dedicated to the memory of the great men who had made Scotland famous throughout the world.
