From the archive: ‘Western Europe problems’

The Scotsman, 4 April 1949

The Scottish Junior Unionists (Eastern Area Committee) held a week-end school at Dunblane, Mr J. G. C. Barr presiding.

The theme was “The British Commonwealth and Western Union.” The opening address was given by Lady Tweedsmuir. M.P., who pointed out that for the first time it had become technically possible for one country to become master of the world. The great new fact was, therefore, the unity of the threatened races, and she asked if there must come a time when their interests would clash or could they go forward in mutual confidence.

Speaking on the problem of Empire defence Colonel A. Gomme-Duncan. M.P. described the Empire as a great moral and physical force, whose maintenance was the cardinal point of Unionist policy. The present Government attitude to the Empire was to liquidate it as quickly as possible.
