From the archive: Unemployment: community service efforts - 8 July, 1933
The Council had before them a survey of community service work in Scotland which showed that the majority of men enrolled as members of centres normally follow unskilled work. Of the enrolments, 50 per cent are in the age group 18 to 30, and 22 per cent in the group 31 to 50 years. Practically all centres provide recreation, but the number of centres which offer nothing but recreational facilities is a constantly diminishing proportion of the whole. Facilities are provided for handicrafts, outdoor sports, physical training, education and allotments, and lectures are given on economics, travel, health and unemployment insurance, music, public speaking, musical appreciation, first aid, and languages; while a number of centres have wireless discussion groups.
