Online super highway to traffic news

A NEW website has been launched to inform motorists of traffic problems in the Lothians.

The internet page will also keep drivers up to date with traffic conditions and help them to avoid tailbacks and roadworks.

The website is run by the National Driver Information and Control System, which also operates message boards on motorways.

Input is being provided by staff at Lothian and Borders Police who regularly update the internet site with the latest traffic information.

Police spokesman Graham Jones explained: "With the onset of the winter months, traffic conditions will worsen and motorists will be wanting to know where and when there are roadworks or tailbacks as a result of accidents.

"This website facility will help keep them up to date with the latest information with the effect, we hope, of less non-emergency calls being received at our control rooms." He added: "This will allow staff to concentrate on more serious incidents and ensure an immediate police response."
