One trial down, and another two still to go

Barry Smith has a number of previous convictions.

On 25 July, 2008, he was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court to 90 hours’ community service for committing an assault with a piece of wood.

On 18 August, 2008, he was sentenced at the same court to 80 hours’ community service for theft by housebreaking.

On 11 August the following year, he was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court to six months’ detention for a breach of community service.

On 22 March, 2010, he was fined £150 at Hamilton Sheriff Court for a breach of a probation order.

At the time of Reamonn Gormley’s killing, Smith was subject to two bail orders, having been granted bail at Hamilton Sheriff Court on 7 June and 17 December, 2010.

The first bail concerned an allegation that on 4 June, 2010, he had a pronged fork in his possession.

The other bail order concerned an alleged offence on 24 August, 2010, a case which he is accused of two counts of assault and robbery.

Smith is charged with – while acting with another – presenting a knife at two people and robbing them of money.
