One reactor switched back on

A NUCLEAR power station has switched one of its reactors back on following a two-day shutdown after jellyfish inundated the seas near the site.

Both reactors at Torness were closed down on Tuesday after "high volumes" of the marine creatures were found on seawater filter screens.

EDF Energy, which operates the plant near Dunbar in East Lothian, said the reactors were shut down as a precautionary measure and there was no danger to the public at any time.

Local fishermen on three trawlers helped clear the moon jellyfish from the seas around the station and it returned to service at 7am yesterday.

Station director Paul Winkle said: "I am delighted that we have a unit back.

"This is in part down to the great efforts of the local fishermen who have helped clear the jellyfish from the sea near the station.

"The decision to shut down reactors proved right and showed that all here at Torness have safety at the heart of everything they do."
