One man shot and another critical after city disturbance

A MAN was shot and another was in a critical condition in hospital after a disturbance in Glasgow.

Police were called to the incident in the Castlemilk area of the city in the early hours of Sunday morning where a 27-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound. A second man was found suffering from a serious head injury. Both the injured men were initially taken to the Victoria Hospital.

The 27-year-old has since been transferred to the Golden Jubilee Hospital, where his condition was described as serious but stable.

The other man was being treated at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital and his condition is said to be critical.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: "Police are currently making door-to-door inquiries and speaking with members of the local community to try and identify the injured man and establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

"Extra patrols are visible in the vicinity to assure the public that everything possible is being done to trace those responsible and police urge anyone with information to contact them at Cathcart police office."

Castlemilk House, a stately old mansion built around Cassilton Tower, which was started in 1460 on the site of a 13th century castle, was demolished by Glasgow Corporation in 1969.

The area was developed as a peripheral housing scheme in the 1950s to accommodate 34,000 people from inner city slum areas such as the Gorbals.

The properties were billed as having open spaces, as well as indoor toilets and bathrooms.
