O'Leary predicts flights bonanza

RYANAIR yesterday signalled plans to launch flights from Glasgow but admitted fares would be higher than at its current west coast base at Prestwick.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary said Glasgow services were likely to start after BAA sold the airport because he claimed its management did not want Ryanair to operate on the same routes as other airlines.

BAA is expected to offload Glasgow after being ordered to sell it or better-performing Edinburgh airport in a Competition Commission report next week.

Mr O'Leary predicted a "revolution" for air passengers when the two airports start competing, and said 40 routes were possible from Glasgow.

Ryanair has 37 routes at Edinburgh, although a quarter this winter will be cut because of high oil prices. I

Mr O'Leary said lower costs there would keep fares lower than at Glasgow.

A Glasgow airport spokesman said "exploratory discussions" has taken place with Ryanair.
