Old Africa map sells for £1900

A RARE map of 16th-century Africa was being shown off after fetching almost £2000 at an auction.

The piece by cartographer Gerard de Jode, who worked in Antwerp, Belgium, during the 1500s, was sold to a collector at Lyon & Turnbull in Broughton Place.

Saleroom assistant Syd Drew was handling the 1573 map with care after it was bought for £1900.

Cathy Marsden, book specialist at Lyon & Turnbull, said: “De Jode’s atlas was not a financial success and no other editions were published. A dozen or so examples of his atlas are said to have survived. Consequently, all maps by Gerard de Jode are quite rare.”
