Obituary: Andy Carver, prevention and care adviser, British Heart Foundation Scotland

Born: 11 September, 1958, in Norwich. Died: 25 January, 2013, in Edinburgh, aged 54

Andy leaves a lasting legacy at British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland, where he worked hard to influence decision-
makers across the country, particularly at NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government, in order to improve care and treatment for heart patients and to help prevent heart disease.

He came to his newly-created post at BHF Scotland in October 2007 from ISD Scotland, the information and statistics division of NHS Scotland, where he negotiated more patient-focused and transparent measures for waiting lists and times.

Prior to this, he was research manager at the Scottish Association of Health Councils. He began his career as a dietician, studying Food Science at Leeds University and post-graduate dietetics in Blackburn.

In all these roles, Andy was diligent, dependable and determined. And, as a man, his values and integrity shone through. He cared about people.

Marjory Burns, director at BHF Scotland, says: “We have been bowled over by the number of truly warm and appreciative tributes sent to us from Andy’s colleagues, both internal and external.

“They talk of his independence of thought, his commitment and ability to find solutions – there are many instances where his contributions were effective and he leaves a lasting legacy. They also recall his sense of fun, caring for others and team spirit.

“He was a vital member of the BHF Scotland team, and made a major contribution to the BHF’s fight against heart disease, until the day before his death. The BHF, and heart patients across the country, are all in his debt.”

Outside of work, Andy was passionate about the outdoors, enjoying climbing, cycling and gardening. And he enjoyed food and dining. Most of all, he loved and appreciated family life.

Andy was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2011 and he received the news with typical positivity, determination and dignity. He is survived by his wife Fiona, adult daughters Hannah and Alice, parents and two brothers.
