From the archive: ‘End Whitehall control’

17 May, 1947

The decontrol of Scottish administration and industry from Whitehall was urged in a resolution carried at yesterday’s session of the Scottish Unionist Association conference, and aviation was cited as an example of the neglect of Scottish interests. One speaker urged the delegates to fight for a separate Scottish aviation controlled by Scots in Scotland, while another argued that all we wanted was to be a partner and not the office boy. The subject of Scottish administration was introduced in an amended resolution submitted by Mr WW Scott Davidson, which suggested that, in view of the increasing control in Scottish administration by Whitehall, and the nationalisation policy of the Socialist Government which was taking away from Scotland management of her industries, the conference called upon the Party to announce as its policy the decontrol of Scottish administration and industry from London.
