OAP needed surgery after A71 smash

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a road smash which saw a 75-year-old man needing surgery.

The crash happened at around 12.30pm on Wednesday on the A71 Edinburgh to Kilmarnock road in West Lothian, half a mile west of Dalmahoy.

A 20-year-old man was driving west in a blue Mini Cooper when there was a collision with a blue Volkswagen Polo travelling in the opposite direction.

The younger driver suffered face and neck injuries, while the elderly man, who was driving the Polo, sustained chest and abdomen injuries. The pensioner was left in a stable condition at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary following surgery.

A police spokesman said: "At this time we are still trying to piece together what happened and we are appealing to any motorists who witnessed the incident to come forward.

"Similarly anyone with any information that can assist is also asked to contact police."
