Northern Constabulary to launch major child abuse investigation

POLICE in the Scottish highlands have announced that they are to carry out major inquiry into child abuse.

Northern Constabulary announced today that the investigation, one of the largest of its kind in years, involves "multiple suspects and victims" and centres on the Muir of Ord area.

It is anticipated that the inquiry will continue for at least another 13 weeks and it is mentioned in Chief Constable Ian Latimer's crime situation report to the board.

The report said: "A large scale child abuse inquiry is currently being carried out in the Muir of Ord area involving multiple victims and multiple suspects.

"This is likely to continue for some 13 weeks yet and is destined to be one of the largest inquiries of its type in recent years."

The inquiry team is made up of central divisional staff taken from Lochaber, Skye & Lochalsh, Ross & Cromarty and the Western Isles.

The Northern Joint Police Board meeting will take place in Lerwick town hall on May 11. No more details were available.
