No bones about it – rare chance to buy a mortuary

POTENTIAL purchasers are lining up to submit bids for a redundant mortuary, set in the spectacular scenery at the foot of 1343-metre-high Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain .

The mortuary at Glen Nevis, on the outskirts of Fort William, was the last local mortuary to be kept open as it dealt with climbing fatalities on Ben Nevis and road traffic accidents on the A82.

But it was declared surplus to requirements last year.

The single-storey building, which still contains a post-mortem examination table and storage shelves for bodies, has now been put up for sale for an unspecified price by Highland Council’s property department and is being marketed as a “rare” opportunity to buy a property in an area where there are few new builds and where existing houses or buildings with development potential attract premium prices.

Frank Scott, the area surveyor for Lochaber, said there had already been a “fair bit of interest”.
