Nine rescued from rollercoaster

Nine people, including children, have been rescued from a rollercoaster ride which became stuck around 60 feet off the ground.

Some people were stranded for more than eight hours after the ride ground to a halt at M&D's theme park at Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell, in Lanarkshire, at around 4.30pm yesterday.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service helped to bring the people, aged nine to 49, to safety.

The last person was rescued by 12.45am today.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said today: "At around 4.30pm one of the rollercoaster rides at M&D's theme park suffered what appeared to be a mechanical failure. Nine people of various ages were on the ride.

"Strathclyde Police and other emergency services were sent to the scene.

"Everybody is now safe and well. No-one needed to be taken to hospital."

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said they sent two fire engines to the scene after they were called.

On the M&D's website it states it is Scotland's "only theme park" with five "white knuckle rollercoasters" including The Tsunami, Tornado, Express, The Runaway Mine Train and The Big Apple.
