Nine candidates for South Uist Estate directors

NINE candidates have put themselves forward for election as directors of Scotland’s largest community-owned crofting estate.

• The result of the ballot is expected to be available on the afternoon of Friday June 21

Sealladh na Beinne Mòire, the community company that owns the 93,000-acre South Uist Estate, has four vacancies on its board.

Current chairman Angus MacMillan, John MacMillan and Stephen MacAulay were all required to stand down as part of the rolling process on the board.

The 2013 Candidates List is: Neil Campbell; Donald John MacAulay; Stephen MacAulay; Angus Archie MacDonald; Archibald MacDonald; Kate MacDonald; Donald Angus MacInnes; Calum MacMillan; and, John MacMillan.

Since the community buy-out in 2006, the company has been behind a variety of projects to regenerate the local economy, including the completion of the country’s largest community-owned windfarm at Loch Carnan.

The outgoing chairman, Angus MacMillan said: “Everything we set out to do in 2006 has been achieved. The company is now valued today at £23million, from a buy-out of £4.5million.”

All Full Members will shortly receive ballot papers from Electoral Reform Services.

The election is open from Monday, June 3, and completed ballots must be received by ERS in the pre-paid envelope by lunchtime on Thursday, June 20, to be counted.

The result of the ballot is expected to be available on the afternoon of Friday June 21. Members can vote for up to four candidates on their ballot form.
