Nicki's fundraising effort's a cut above the rest

A YOUNG mother is shaving off her long black hair to raise funds for cancer sufferers and a children's hospice charity.

Nicki Malcolm, 24, from East Lothian, was determined to raise funds for Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre, in memory of her grandfather who died of cancer.

She also decided to help the Children's Hospice Association Scotland, after hearing about a friend's son who was seriously ill and required their services.

She hopes to raise at least 250 for each charity by shaving her locks at the Brig Inn on Friday, 7 May. The hair will then be donated to a charity making wigs for young cancer sufferers.

Mrs Malcolm said: "I really wanted to do something because of the amazing services they provide. I realise how lucky I am that my own wee boy is healthy, but not everyone is so fortunate.

"My grandad died of cancer and it affects so many people. Maggie's does a wonderful job for the patients, as well as their friends and families."
