NHS expecting disability rise

NHS Lothian should prepare for an increase in children suffering from complex learning disabilities, its own advisers have said.

Babies born with complicated illnesses can now expect to live well into adulthood. And while this is to be welcomed, it has been warned that systems should be put in place to ensure enough help – medical and social – is available.

In its Planning for the Future document, NHS Lothian said: "We need to ensure that children with disabilities' transition into adulthood is not hindered due to lack of forward planning."
