Newsagent goes bankrupt a year after shop robbed

A PROMINENT Tollcross newsagent has closed down after its owner went bankrupt just a year after his store was broken into.

Newsbox, at the busy corner of Lauriston Place and Brougham Street, has been boarded up and the estate of its owner, Jamil Chaudry, of Baberton Mains Crescent, has been sequestered by the sheriff at Edinburgh.

Mr Chaudry's creditors are invited to submit a claim to Glasgow-based Douglas Jackson Chartered Accountants, which has been appointed to act as trustee on the sequestrated estate.

The bankruptcy is the culmination of a tough year for Mr Chaudry, which began with a break-in at his store on July 7 last year.

Ronald Crombie, 27, stole cigarettes before brandishing a screwdriver at two passers-by who witnessed the incident and tailed him until police arrived.

In December Mr Crombie was sentenced to 22 months in jail for theft, assault and possessing an offensive weapon
