New website launched to support gay health staff

A NEW website has been developed for gay health workers in the Lothians.

With the help of charity Stonewall, NHS Lothian developed the page on its intranet system to increase its profile as an employer sympathetic to gay, lesbian and transvestite workers.

The resource gives ideas and information about activities that can help gay awareness, and help staff seek support and advice if they need it.

Alan Boyter, director of human resources and organisational development, said: "We know that people work best when they can be themselves at work. This means feeling confident about being out in the workplace, being able to get the right support when it's needed and knowing that NHS Lothian is serious about its responsibilities as an equal opportunities employer."

Recent evidence produced by the health board showed that gay staff could be more vulnerable to mental health issues.
