New tribute to community's war dead

A NEW memorial is to be unveiled honouring 245 soldiers from the Craigneuk, North Lanarkshire, area who died in the two world wars and in Northern Ireland.

Campaigners have raised more than 65,000 over the past three years to pay for work to add the names of the fallen to the memorial outside Craigneuk library.

The area has suffered great loss of life, with 159 dying in the First World War, 84 in the Second and a further two lives lost in the Northern Ireland conflict. The memorial will be an updated version of the current one and will include six new panels naming every fallen soldier. It will be unveiled on 27 August.
