New system to improve care access

A SYSTEM has been launched which allows patients with musculoskeletal problems to refer themselves for physiotherapy, in a bid to speed up access to treatment.

The health board project in East Lothian and Midlothian means patients can bypass their GP and instead book appointments by filling out a form.

NHS Lothian chiefs hope the new system will mean those people who need treatment most will be able to gain faster access to care.

Tests have shown that the quicker patients with such injuries are treated, the greater chance there is that the treatment will be a success.

Morag Barrow, allied health professional manager for East Lothian and Midlothian, said: "Patients can still go to their GP, but this method of referral will add to our menu of options to access the physiotherapy service.

"This new service will improve access for patients, as well as free up time in GP surgeries.

"People will be seen more quickly. The longer the time between a musculoskeletal injury and receiving specialist advice, then the more likely that a problem will turn into a chronic one."
