New jobs as firms meet

TWO Scottish meat suppliers are to merge and provide a jobs boost to the Midlothian area.

Bonnyrigg-based Campbell Brothers is to merge with Dumfriesshire firm Buccleuch Foods.

The new company will be based at Campbell's headquarters and is expected to lead to the creation of "several jobs".

The merger comes after both firms enjoyed significant growth in recent years.

Stuart Robinson, chairman of Campbell, said: "Buccleuch Foods have created a reputation for providing the best of Scottish meat and game, particularly the famous Buccleuch Beef.

"Getting together is an eminently sensible step for both businesses."

John Glen, chief executive of the Buccleuch Group, said: "Regrettably, this decision will result in the closure of our plant at Castle Douglas, but a number of jobs will be created at Campbell Brothers' premises in Midlothian."
