New force chief takes up his duties

A NEW police chief in charge of Midlothian and East Lothian has taken up his duties following the retirement of his predecessor.

Chief Superintendent Mark Williams has assumed responsibility as the divisional commander for 'E' division, based at Dalkeith police station.

Chief Supt Williams succeeded Chief Superintendent Terry Powell, who has retired after completing his 30 years' service.

He has carried out a range of roles across the force, including being brought in to run the Force Communication Centre at Bilston Glen.

During his career, Chief Supt Powell led operations against the north Edinburgh drug gang led by Marc Webley and James Tant, who were in 2005 jailed for shooting a rival dealer. He also led a blitz against drug dealers in Midlothian in 2008.

Chief Supt Williams said: "I'd like to extend my sincere gratitude to my predecessor, Chief Supt Terry Powell, who has retired from the force after serving for 30 years."
