New flats get go-ahead

PLANS for eight new apartments off Leith Walk have been given the go-ahead.

A private developer submitted the application to create a new five-storey building containing the eight apartments on the site of a detached two- storey house at Pilrig Street.

Council officials had recommended that the scheme should be approved. Planning committee councillors Gary Peacock and Colin Keir had tabled an amendment calling for consent to be refused on the grounds that the building would not be in keeping with the character of properties in the adjacent conservation area. Their amendment was only supported by one other councillor.
