Shocked neighbours in their quiet suburban street described Mr and Mrs Harley, who are thought to have had two teenage children, as a "lovely couple".

Mrs Harley's mother lives a street away and was being comforted by her son Jim.

Fighting back tears today, he said: "I just don't know what to say."

Taxi driver Mr Harley, 51, and his 47-year-old wife had both worked in the past for the Edinburgh-based stewarding company Rock Steady.

Armed police raced to their house in St Andrews Avenue, Bishopbriggs, after the alarm was raised at 7.45pm on Tuesday.

The street, close to the local golf club, was sealed off after officers discovered the bodies inside number 25.

It is understood detectives are investigating the theory that one of the couple shot the other before taking their own life.

Neighbour Bill Kerr, 56, said: "They were very much a family. Both of their children, a boy and a girl, are still at school. They have been here for 15 years or more.

"They were very nice. I found out when I came home last night that something had happened. It is a very big shock as it's a close-knit community here."

Another neighbour, aged 73, described Mr and Mrs Harley as a "lovely couple".

He said: "I am really shocked. I have never known any hassle around here. It is very quiet.

"Last night I counted seven police officers plus three forensic people. An ambulance came around 3am this morning.

"I didn't see him around that much but he was a taxi driver. He didn't talk much in the street but they were a very nice couple."

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "It is a shock to have something like this happen in the street. It's very quiet normally.

"They seemed quite a happy family, with a teenage girl and boy. I never heard of anything going on at all, they seemed quite normal."

Outside the house, two police officers stood next to a blue Volkswagen Passat parked in the driveway. The curtains and blinds of the house were closed. Two other officers could be seen at the side of the house.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "At around 7.45pm on Tuesday March 16 the bodies of a male and female were found within a property on St Andrews Avenue, Bishopbriggs.

"A full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal and post-mortems will be carried out in due course to establish the exact cause of death."

Detective Inspector Stephen Grant said: "We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths of Mr and Mrs Harley.

"I would like to reassure members of the local community that this incident poses no risk or danger to anyone else."

A spokesman for G4S Events, which took over Rock Steady in 2008, confirmed Mr and Mrs Harley had both previously been employed by the stewarding company.

He said: "Mr Harley left Rock Steady in 1995 prior to the acquisition by G4S, however Mrs Harley continued to work for the company and was consequently employed by G4S Events.

"G4S extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Mr and Mrs Harley at this very difficult time."
