It is understood the occupants of the three-storey terrace house were not at home when the fire started.

Police and fire investigation teams are probing the origins of the fire. It is not yet known whether there are suspicious circumstances.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said: “On arrival the house was well alight and the houses either side of the fire were evacuated by firefighters.

“It looks like someone lives there but no one was in the house last night.”
