Neighbour saved as blaze claims flat

A man has been rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in a neighbouring flat.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in the Muirhouse area of Edinburgh at 11.15pm on Friday night.

The fire had taken hold in the living room of a first-floor flat in May Court, Pennywell Medway.

Firefighters forced entry into the flat next door to the blaze and rescued a 31-year-old man. He was attended to by paramedics at the scene for possible smoke inhalation, but did not need hospital treatment.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said nobody was in the flat where the "quite substantial" blaze took hold.

A spokeswoman said the service subsequently delivered leaflets on fire safety to local residents.
