NCR moves to cut 70 staff at Dundee R&D operation

Affected staff in the hardware operations side of the company were told their jobs were under threat yesterday morning. A 30-day consultation period over redundancies has begun.

All staff at the Gourdie Industrial Estate facility – thought to be around 400 – were also called to a mass meeting where they were told of the situation by managers.

NCR declined to comment on the jobs threat.

However, the Scottish Government said it was already working with the firm to help those affected.

National Cash Registers opened in 1946 and was once one of Dundee’s biggest employers, with about 6,000 staff, becoming a world leading producer of ATMs in the 1980s and 1990s. However, six years ago it axed about 600 workers and production ceased in 2009.

The Discovery Centre has remained open with 400 staff employed to work on software solutions for the financial sector.
