Nat Fraser to face retrial over wife's murder

Nat Fraser will face a retrial for the murder of his estranged wife, appeal court judges have decided.

The decision came as judges at the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh formally quashed Nat Fraser's 2003 conviction.

That came after a recent ruling by the UK Supreme Court said it was unsafe.

Today, Fraser was told he would be tried again for the murder. He was refused bail and remanded in custody.

Giving his decision, Lord Hamilton said the court would grant the Crown a motion seeking permission to hold a fresh trial.

He said they would "set aside the verdict of the trial court", quash the conviction and grant authority to bring a new prosecution.

The judge said the reasons for the decision will be publicised once proceedings finish.

No date has been set for Mr Fraser to return to court.

Arlene Fraser was last seen in April 1998 taking her children to school.

Her sister, Carol Gillies, was in court today. Accompanied by her husband, she made no comment as she left the building.
