Nasim Jamil murder trial: Radio host 'had more than 50 wounds'

A RADIO host found dead in her home had more than 50 wounds to her head and neck, a court heard today.

The body of Nasim Jamil (pictured) was discovered by her daughter in the Glasgow flat they shared in the city's west end on December 9 last year.

Khalid Sarwar, 29, denies murdering the widow, who presented an agony aunt show on Asian radio station Awaz FM.

The forensic pathologist who examined Mrs Jamil told the trial at the High Court in Glasgow she died from blunt force injuries to her head.

Dr John Clark, 59, who is based at the University of Glasgow, said the rounded nature of some of the 55 wounds indicated they were "almost certainly" inflicted by a hammer.

The expert said he noted a total of about 150 injuries on Mrs Jamil's head and body including lacerations and bruising. Her skull was fractured in four places and she suffered brain damage.

The trial has heard how Nazia Jamil, 36, returned home from work in the evening to find her mother's body lying in the kitchen.

Her screams were heard by neighbours who rushed to the top floor of the block on Byres Road.

Dr Clark said Mrs Jamil could have lived for 30 minutes after being injured, although she would have been unconscious at the time.

He told the trial: "I can only imagine she was on the ground when the injuries were inflicted, certainly the bulk of them.

"She must have been on her left side, so her right side was prominent. Whoever inflicted these injuries could have been in a variety of positions."

The pathologist was shown a hammer, a screwdriver and three kitchen knives in court which he agreed could possibly have been used to inflict the injuries seen on Mrs Jamil.

Sarwar is accused of repeatedly striking her on the head and body with a hammer, screwdriver, knife or similar instruments and hitting her on the head with a bottle and a piece of glass.

He is also accused of stealing a light bulb, two telephones, keys, gloves, jewellery, a handbag and other personal items.

He faces a third charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Sarwar denies all the charges and has lodged a special defence of incrimination.
